Businesses that have lost earnings due to rail disruption should be given rate relief

Government should compensate businesses that have lost customers and earnings due to severe disruption on the railways, say Blick Rothenberg.

Andy Sanford a partner at the firm said, ‘The current train debacle will have cost businesses thousands of pounds in lost sales and earnings because people in many areas including those in the North will not have been able to get to shops and offices.’

He added, ‘As things stand these businesses will not be compensated by the rail companies for loss of footfall so perhaps at a time of high rate bills the Government should consider a transitioning rate for all those businesses that have been unduly affected by the timetable changes.’

Andy Sanford said, ‘That clearly businesses would need to be able to show that they had missed out during this period but if they could then the Government should step in and give them a rate relief which could take the form of a short term transitional relief.’
