'Pasty Tax' fight hots up with Downing St march
VAT partner Alan Pearce, told Sky News the Government's rationale for taxing freshly cooked items was simply to "iron out some anomalies".
"I think people should all be mindful that, apart from Ireland and Malta, the UK is the only other EU country that does not apply VAT to all food," he said.
"With most of the EU taxing food at a reduced rate (between 3% and 7%) and others taxing it at the standard rate (20% or more) successive UK Governments have defended calls to do the same in the UK and have retained the zero rate.
"I doubt that the proposed change in taxing certain hot foods will affect many people's buying habit. Most food suppliers do need to realise that they are not getting a bad deal in the UK."
