All eyes on the emergency Budget
On Wednesday 12th May, the coalition parties published an 11 point policy document containing tax reforms from both their manifestos. What is still unclear is when many of the changes and new allowances will take effect - this will be confirmed in the emergency Budget. In an article that focuses on the changes that could be made, Blick Rothenberg comments on the possible changes to pension tax relief, highlighting that the Liberal Democrat policy is to cut relief to 20 per cent.

Winners and losers under coalition tax
The Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition will see millions of people freed from paying income tax, however capital gains tax will more than double, proposals to cut inheritance tax have been put on hold as have plans to cut national insurance. Alan Pearce comments that changes to the rate of VAT have still not been mentioned, but maintains that a rise to 20% will be seen in the lifetime of this parliament.

Pensions hit by new IHT ruling
Savers who delay drawing benefits from their pension funds may be subject to inheritance tax (IHT) following a surprise legal victory by HMRC. Martin Reynard comments that HMRC is now ignoring the wider circumstances - regardless of actual income needs, it considers that where the individual could take their pension but decides not to, this is IHT avoidance.
