Adding VAT to private school fees would only be possible after leaving the EU

06.04.2017

The Labour party’s plans to add VAT to private school fees to fund school meals for state school pupils will only be possible after we have formally left the EU, says leading accountancy practice Blick Rothenberg.

“Currently this move would not be legal,” said Alan Pearce, VAT partner at Blick Rothenberg, “It would only be legal after we have formally left the EU and until then private education must be treated as exempt from VAT under EU law.”
